19 Real-Time Hybrid Substructuring Results of the Mars Pathfinder Parachute Deployment 185 Fig. 19.1 Depiction of RTHS testing procedure. Image of numerical substructure courtesy: NASA/JPL-Caltech Fig. 19.2 Image captures from the high-speed footage recorded during testing 19.3 Results The reaction forces during parachute deployment were tested via RTHS testing for two scenarios. In the first “Fixed” scenario, a null displacement was commanded of the actuator. This scenario was similar to a true fixed-base test. In the second “RTHS” scenario, the displacement command signal of the actuator was the output of the reaction force to the parachute mounting point displacement. Images from high-speed footage as well as the reaction forces obtained for the two test scenarios can be seen in Figs. 19.2 and 19.3 respectively. In order to isolate dynamics within the testing region analyzed, the reaction forces have been sent through a 2-pole, 40 Hz, digital low-pass filter.
