6 R. Garcia et al. 1.3 Example Problem An example problem is used in this study to demonstrate the applicability of the different methods. It is represented as a cylinder with a plate at one end and a beam on top of the plate, see Fig. 1.8. There are eight ¼-20 fasteners used to connect the plate to the cylinder. The fastener properties used are those of steel. For this study, the fastener models were made to be very stiff in the attempt of obtaining stiffness values on the order of 1.0 ×107 lb/in. The plate, cylinder, and rectangular beam are aluminum. The photos shown in Fig. 1.9 are representative of the test model.
